It’s been 11 years since Blythe Danner last walked the Broadway boards in Follies, but this stage and screen star has been keeping plenty busy. Between starring in the Meet the Parents movies, frequent appearances in Williamstown and off-Broadway, and guest-starring on TV shows from Huff to Will & Grace, Danner also plays mother to Gwyneth and Jake Paltrow, and doting grandma to Apple (age eight) and Moses (age six) Martin! Now, Danner is back on Broadway as Millicent Winter, the kooky mother to Matthew Broderick in Nice Work If You Can Get It. Below, Danner recalls Broadway debut bloopers, her favorite old-school musicals and getting recognized by Fockers fans on the subway.

 

What’s new with your grandkids?
 We’ve been texting! Apple and I text, which is wonderful; I never thought that we’d be doing that. She sends me pictures of the dog, and I take pictures and send them to her. They’re great. They’re in London right now, but they may be in L.A. for a while soon. It’s very hard to ever pinpoint my whole gang. My son is in South Africa right now, working on a film that he wrote, so everybody’s busy.

I get on my hands and knees and act like a complete fool! We have a lot of fun together,” the star told us. Blythe spoke to us at the New York premier of her hilarious new coming-of-age comedy, Hello I Must Be Going. She plays an overburdened mother whose grown daughter moves back home to regroup after a tough divorce. The actresses real life though isn’t likely to imitate art, “I don’t think Gwyneth would ever move back in, but of course if she wanted to.” Chris and the band are also apparently welcome, “I would love them next door, banging away on the drums, and Chris writing new songs.” Blythe in fact told us about how Gwenyth and Chris met – directly after her husband Bruce Paltrow died of cancer in 2002. “Fix You, was written for my husband, actually, ‘Tears streaming down your face, you’ve lost something you can’t replace, I will try to fix you.’ Chris missed meeting Bruce by six days. A friend of Gwenyth’s just made her go to a Coldplay concert, to cheer her up. She didn’t want to go but she did and she met Chris.” Shortly after that fateful show, Gwyneth and Chris were an item and Chris immediately began working on the ballad to soothe Gwenyth’s grief. “And then he wrote that song,’ Blythe said, “And it just kills me every time. She wrote, “Some of the best memories I have from childhood are of my mother lying in bed with me and reading me stories. I can remember way back when books like ‘Pat the Bunny’ and ‘Goodnight Moon’ were appropriate, so we’re talking decades. We had a few greatest hits, ‘Elouise’ and ‘The Chronicles of Narnia’ being frontrunners. That time together was pretty indelible. I’m always looking for great books I may not know about to read to my kids. We’ve put together some recommendations that are worth checking out.”
